ماnot رَونَقُsplendor of الفَجرthe dawn وَالظَلماءُwhile darkness عاكِفَةٌlingers
إِذاwhen تَنَفّسit breathes نوراًlight فيin حَناياهاits folds
Neither dawn's splendor, while darkness lingers,
Neither dawn's charm, nor darkness crouching
as it breathes light into the folds of darkness,
When it breathes light into its folds,
فَهَبَّتso stirred الطَيرthe birds تَدعوcalling to الطَيرthe birds مُرسلةsending forth
مِنof الأَغاريدthe songs أَحلاهاtheir sweetest وَأَشجاهاand their most plaintive
and the birds stir, calling to birds and pouring forth
Nor birds taking wing, calling to birds released
the sweetest and most plaintive of songs,
With the most beautiful and woody of trills,
وَلاnor الورودthe roses كَأمثالlike images of الخُدودthe cheeks وَقَدand already
تَفتَّحتhave blossomed فيin الرِياضthe gardens الفيحspacious تَغشاهاcovering them
nor roses, like cheeks, that have
Nor roses like cheeks when they bloom
blossomed in the spacious gardens, covering them,
In gardens, their fragrance spreading,
كلاno indeed وَلاnor قَطراتُdrops of الطَلِّthe dew كامِنَةnestled
فيin الأقحوانthe daisies وَأُمُّand the mother of الشَهدhoney تَرعاهاtends them
no, nor dewdrops nestled
Nor drops of dew waiting
in daisies, while the mother of honey tends them,
For bees in petals, and honey to tend them,
يَوماًever بِأَجمَلَlovelier منthan ميٍّMay إِذاwhen اِبتَسمتshe smiles

are ever lovelier than May when she smiles
Are as beautiful as May when she smiles
beneath her veil and her front teeth gleam before me.
Beneath her veil, her cheeks shining at me,
غَداًtomorrow تُفارقنيshe will leave me ميّMay وَفيand in كَبديmy liver
I struggle to bear it آهاًah! وَأَواهاand alas!
Tomorrow May will leave me, while in my liver
Tomorrow May will leave me with longing
lies a longing I struggle to bear—ah, alas!
I will endure, sighing, moaning for her.
