My heart fell in love with her, though I did not know her name.

And her eyes hold what I feel, though she has never heard my name.

And we met only on the road,

With a glance like anyone else's, shooting but not killing.

Is it not strange, when the earth is full of women like her,

That, against my will, I am mad for her rather than the beauties?

And why has she not borne longing and love

For another? My soul belongs to love; my body has not escaped it.

I see her and cannot control a weakling's collapse

Within me, robbed of courage and resolve.

Then the intensity of what I feel steals my color,

For her, and at what my love for her casts upon my imagination.

It seems to me that I drew near and she turned away,

So I turn my face away, my breast heavy with grief.

I thought ill of her, though she had not yet done anything

To warrant suspicion—how like sin suspicion is!

And her pallor reveals the secret within her ribs

Whenever we meet—how wrong, then, is my suspicion!

And I swear, if I spoke to her and there were laid bare

Our secrets, my cares would be no different from hers.

Love—its right hand has united disparate hearts,

And how many bonds of kinship its left hand has severed!

If things in the world of love are as I see them,

Then what is strange about the love of the blind and the deaf?
