Look at what al-Muzaffar has done: indeed, he

helped the cause while absent, without being present.

He revived the hearts, though between them and him stood

    iron cells and army garrisons.

They set bail and dignity before him,

in vain—can an incidental quality be compared with an essence?

And he deemed hesitation in choosing a disgrace,

so he ransomed his dignity with six months.

The field of struggle was not emptied by his imprisonment,

for indeed he cast his blazing heart into it.

And how often it stood empty despite a teeming army

walking toward it with its faltering gait.

Indeed, al-Muzaffar's body is of iron,

as I see it, while their bodies are of sugar.
