وإنand even if أذْقنَthey make taste القلبَthe heart صابَthe bitter sap of العذابْtorment
I would give my soul for Seville's graceful maidens,
I would sacrifice my soul for beautiful Seville,
Even if they make the heart taste torment's bitter sap.
Though it has caused my heart to suffer torment.
عَلقْتُI fell in love منهنَّamong them بِتربِwith a peer of النَّهارْthe day
وجهاًin face وصنوِand a twin of اللَّيلِthe night فرعاًin tresses وعَينand eyes
I fell for one among them, the day's peer
There I clung to the soil of daytime,
In face, and night's twin in tresses and eyes.
And the tender branches of night, a face and eye.

ولاand does not يباليcare كيفhow أمسىhe spends the evening وأْينْand where
For one like her, one like me casts off the bridle,
In the like of them, my peer sheds restraint,
And cares not how or where evening finds him.
And cares not how the evening comes or where.

I drink from her mouth and the cup of wine
Together I drink from her mouth the cup of wine,
At once—how, then, can I sober from two intoxications?
So how can I wake from these two intoxications?
لَهْفيmy anguish عليهاfor her يومَthe day شَطَّgrew distant المزارْthe meeting-place
وساقَهاand drove her البيْنُseparation إلىto النَّيْربَينْal-Nayrabayn
My anguish for her, the day the meeting-place grew distant,
My yearning for her the day Al-Mazar was flooded,
And separation drove her to al-Nayrabayn.
And distance led her to the Nile banks.
ودّعتُهاI bade her farewell ومُهجتيand my soul مُشفيهْnear death
لمdid not يشفنيheal me رشفُsipping at الثناياthe front teeth العِذابsweet
I bade her farewell, my soul on the brink of death;
I bid her farewell, though my love was burning,
Sipping at her sweet front teeth did not heal me.
Not soothed by a sip of consolation.

And she bade farewell with a beguiling glance,
She bid farewell with an alluring glance,
Taking my mind with her in the caravan.
Taking my heart with her in her company.

O bygone ages of al-Andalus,
O vintage of carefree Andalusia,
Fortunate indeed was whoever lived in those lands.
He who lived in those meadows was blessed.

Was life really thus in that land?
With lavish days, filling the breast?
Days filled with luxury, hearts filled with joy?

Was this the enchantment of beautiful women,
Was temptation really thus in the singing girls,
And the rapture of union, and passion's burning heat?
And the rapture of union and the heat of passion?

Still, my pledge honors their covenant;
Still my oath to them keeps faith,
I bring back their past by lavishing my youth.
I recount their past with the sacrifice of youth.

I am the son of Zaydoun, and she is my inclination,
Wallada in her blood and skin.
A passion in my blood and my inspiration.

My first acquaintance with the arts of love
My first lesson in the art of love
Was Beirut—how delightful that first love!
Was Beirut, where I learned love at first.

And it was said, 'Can a straying heart grow wise?'
And it was said, can a heart led astray find guidance?
And wisdom is folly when youth comes on.
Yet guidance itself goes astray in burgeoning youth.

When I said, 'My heart is quenched,' I stretched out
I extended my hand when it was said, and my heart was sated,
My hand; she turned it away from the spring.
But it drew back from the spring.

Beirut, had I wished, I would have warded off parting
O Beirut, had I wished, I could have repelled trouble,
Willingly, and not forsaken you—so woe to me!
And not abandoned you, but woe to me!

In God's keeping lie hopes that have perished,
In God's protection, my wish has come true,
Tall, green, supple, and fresh.
A lush, verdant grove, the place of my contentment.

Lies good consolation for the grievous loss.
Can be found for the grave loss.

God, how deep it is in the earth!
In a grave so very deep in the earth.

I fear heedlessness will startle them away.

And after another ten, my days twist back upon themselves,
And the oil will run dry, and the flame will fade.
The oil runs out and the flame gutters.
