    I see an ill-omened number—not like three

And ten, but surpassing it in calamities.

It is a thousand; Palestine has never known a blow

More severe and devastating than it, ever dealt by an assailant.

A thousand immigrate, then a thousand are smuggled in,

And a thousand enter as tourists, not to return.

And a thousand passports, then a thousand means

To ease the difficulties they encounter.

And at sea are thousands, as though its surging waters

And its waves were packed into the ships.

Sons of my homeland, is there an awakening after slumber?

And is there any ray amid those depths of darkness?

So, by God, I do not know, in a gust of despair,

Whether to call upon Amin or appeal to Raghib.
