I did not wish to be called cruel,

And so frighten dreams away from her eyes.

And longing drives me to wake her,

While my hand is wary of reaching toward her.

And as though slumber had sensed a blessing,

So it stayed, never leaving her eyelids.

Woe to my heart! How was it not slain

By the sight of her turning from side to side?

And she sighed from what her ribs kept hidden.

O longing, woe to you! Do not startle her breasts.

It is anguish enough for me that I gazed at her hair,

As it bends down, sipping the dew of her cheeks.

And I am jealous of it when slumber rests content with her,

And it stirs me, taking her forearms as its pillow.

I gaze with a lover's yearning; nothing is left of

Patience in me, as I lean over her.

Then my decorum holds me back, and I withdraw in awe,

And I wish I could kneel at her feet.

So the soul is caught between trepidation at what it sees

And burning desire; so I was bewildered by its two states.

And perhaps my longings carried me to the limit,

So I fell upon her lips, never regaining my senses.
