بالحسن مفتنَّا
He was a joyous nightingale,
He was cheerfully singing
Enraptured by beauty.
Infatuated by beauty
فابتسمَso smiled الحبُّlove لَهُupon him
فابتسمَ الحبُّ لَهُ
فأحسنso he held a favorable الظَّنَّاopinion
فأحسن الظَّنَّا
So Love smiled upon him,
Then love smiled at him
And he thought well of it.
So he wished well

Then it struck him with that which
But then love struck him with affliction
Changes the melody.
That changes the tune

He spent the night wandering, wailing,
He started wandering sadly
Though so often he had sung.
Though long he had sung

ماhow أْظلَمَunjust القاضيthe judge
ما أْظلَمَ القاضي
A judgment that Love decreed—
Love judged him
How unjust the judge!
How unfair the judge!

You'd find an hour's union
And an age of rejection.
And an age's abandonment

Love leads the young man,
Love leads the youth
While his heart is blind.
While his heart is blind

It elevates him until when
It has set him upon a star,

It throws him from the summit
Shattering him utterly.
Shattering him to pieces

We both lived with hope
Sending them forth as verse.
Sending it out in poetry
