Ask the garden of poetry what laid waste to its spreading tree,

Until it was bare of the shades of beauty and fragrance.

And who stood forth to repel the surging flood

When it poured down from the lofty hills?

And who raided those tents at midmorning,

Permitting their dismantling after their ropes were secured?

It is death, never ceasing to rob,

So it leaves no living soul unplundered.

It is the Arab world's duty to mourn its poet,

And shed tears streaming in a downpour,

And release a burning sigh that splits

The ribs of every heartsick, anguished soul.

Who is there for poetry, deep-rooted in its Arabness,

Bringing the twin enchantments of meaning and form?

And who is there for the radiant rhymes, shining

Like the faces of fair, delicate Bedouin women?

O Abu al-Makarim, rise at the gathering and improvise

Your polished verses, never honed by revision.

And kindle the fire, for the people have dormant

Hearts; abased is a heart that is not aflame.

And breathe your defiance into their nostrils in anger,

For you may stir the idols of the shrines.

Humiliation has gripped my people, so no wonder

They heed neither rebuke nor reproach.

How noble the excuse would be, had battle scattered

Their mangled bodies, some pierced and others struck down!

But their foes' stratagems overwhelmed them while they were

Heedless and distracted, unaware of those stratagems.

And they are content with a handout dangled

By their colonizers, drawing it away and bringing it near.

As though their forebears' glory had not been built

On swords and the points of spears.

O explorer of every land whose people are Arabs,

Crossing it, worn out by climbing and descending,

And seeking among them knowledge and understanding

Of their condition, between night travel and daytime journeys:

Did you meet among them people who lived in ease,

Or did you alight in a land unstricken by calamity?

Or which shepherd had no wolf beside him,

If you did not find a shepherd worse than the wolf?

Al-Kazimi has made eternity his abode,

Where he receives from God the finest welcome.

O Abu al-Makarim, look down from your heights and say:

"Do I see Palestine, or a world of wonders?"

And look at us; let your gaze roam through the homeland,

A gaze never once veiled from right guidance.

You will find a mighty one who kept his promise to the intruder, yet

From him we had only Urqub's promise.

And seventeen years have passed for him in the land,

And his rule is a mixture of intimidation and inducement.

This world may end while in his hand

Our fate remains hostage to training and experimentation.

A state whose evil I see spread among the people,

And whose benefits go to mounts and favorites.

Is there any ease in Palestine after misery,

Or a smile from time after its frown?

How many hopes resolve and swift action have fulfilled,

While an aim failed through delay and vacillation!
