You cut off thirst's relief when you cut off the water supply.

When you cut off contact, you cut off the quenching rain

So restore what you severed, and give the thirsty drink.

What you severed cannot be mended to ease the thirst

جفوت وأكبر ظن المحب

توهم منك الجفا كبرياء

توهم منك الجفا كبرياء

You were aloof, and the lover's strongest surmise

I've grown cold though lovers suppose

is to imagine your aloofness as pride.

Your aloofness arrogance, nothing worse

وما خلت أني وانٍ جل دائي

أقاسي من الخل داءً عياء

أقاسي من الخل داءً عياء

And I did not think myself feeble; my illness has grown grave.

Yet I, well aware of my sickness, endure

I endure an incurable malady from my close friend.

The bitterness of loss with no complaint or curse

ولا حسبن الذي في الحروب

يهز اللواء يهز اللواء

And do not suppose that he who, in battle,

Think not in battle merely waving banners

waves the banner can shake the banner.

Makes one worthy of honor and praise

أخوك الذي إن مشيت أماما

إليه فشمر يمشي وراء

إليه فشمر يمشي وراء

Your brother is the one who, if you walk forward

For I, your brother, would step ahead to shield

toward him, then girds himself to walk backward.

Or walk behind if you should lead the way

أسلمان ما في الورى حازم

أسلمان ما في الورى حازم

إذا ما بلوت الرجال الوناء

إذا ما بلوت الرجال الوناء

O Salman, there is no resolute man among humankind

None in existence more staunch than we two

when you put the sluggish men to the test.

When trials temper and prove men of finer clay

إذا لم تجد حارزاً للأناء

إذا لم تجد حارزاً للأناء

فخل الأداوة تشرح ماء

فخل الأداوة تشرح ماء

If you find no guardian for the vessel,

If you lack one to guard your vessels fair

then leave the waterskin to release water.

Leave them unstoppered, let the water flow free and bare
