Who told your eyes that the heart is ensnared?

O fortune of the lovelorn, if fortunes should favor him!

They said: Your eyes, O oryx-eyed one, have a squint.

So I said: Enough! There are wiles in the eye, not a squint.

I cried, invoking God: O wide eye of his,

withhold your arrows; let those eyes not slay us.

He passed beyond the snare, escaping toward the bān trees—

a gazelle who showed himself, ensnaring with his eyelids.

When he sways, bending like a bān shoot,

his hips and rump almost come apart.

Slender-waisted and playful, draped in beauty,

girded in delicacy, enveloped in charm.

A ransom for both your eyes, O full moon of the sky:

all that the aged she-camels bear, or the canopies enclose.

In loving you, I joined my evening drinking to my morning draught,

till, in love with you, I seemed a drunken drinker.

O you who bear your honeyed mouth as a cup for me,

as though its saliva were spiced wine and honey.

I did not know, when God granted me love of you,

whether hope had led me, or death had driven me.

Is your saliva honey, or night rain cooled by the north wind?

As though your fragrance in it were concentrated ambergris.

You burdened me with a weight that, were a hand to lay it on

the solid mountains, they would grow light and move away.

Why do I soothe an eye that is all sleeplessness

with nearness to you, and a heart that is all dread?

Ah, may God preserve those days when you seemed

roses upon cheeks, and meetings were kisses.

I conceal my love for you, but yearning for you reveals it.

And how can mature she-camels conceal their yearning?

If the caravan resolves to depart, then because of you I have

a body that stays, and a heart that journeys away from it.

I may conceal my passion, yet my longings reveal it,

and veil my tears, yet my eyelids stream.
