    We inhaled the sweet fragrance—

    his—with both eye and nose.

He was clear as wine in the cup—

a fawn who is pure, yet offers no true affection.

And how delicate his cheeks are—

    glass fashioned from delicacy.

Henna-stained of palm—if it would suffice,

we would caress him with our palms.

We pray, and he is the qibla,

    and row stands beside row.

And were it not for God—not for people—

we would worship him on an edge.

A beloved who, whenever he walks,

walks like a bough upon a curving sand dune.

So, O you of the swaying waist,

and O you of the quivering rump!
