خجلاً تغضُّ عيونها في المجلس
The dark-eyed one made the narcissus’s eyes droop;
The eyes are desirous, a pair of narcissus eyes
In shame, it lowers its eyes in the gathering.
Bashfully, their eyes are lowered in the gathering

نسي الصدود وذكرته سجية
فغداso he began يطالبcalls to account نفسهhimself فيconcerning ماwhat نسيhe forgot
فغدا يطالب نفسه في ما نسي
He forgot his aloofness, but his nature reminded him;
He forgot firmness and she reminded him of surrender
So he began calling himself to account for what he had forgotten.
So he began seeking in himself what he forgot

حتى حرقت رداءه بتنفسي
I begrudged his robe its touch upon him,
And I swooned over him when he touched his cloak
Until I burned his robe with my breath.
Until I scorched his cloak with my breath

I endured the finely arched brow above his eye,
I suffered from him, knitted brow of his eye
With a heart from which curved bows recoiled.
Fiercely evading its strict turn

O sleepy-lidded one, lull a wakeful man to sleep,
O sleepy-eyed wake up sleeping
Kept awake by the drowsiness of languid eyes.
Awake from the slumber of the drowsy eyes

In haste, he seeks death for himself,
Hastening, the doves seek shade for themselves
With a letter like the letter of al-Mutalammis.
With a petition like the petition of one feeling about

O you who soothe me with two glasses of solace,
Does my illness with two translucent flasks excuse me
From a dark eye and dusky lips,
From a beholder who desired and a mouth that kissed

Rise, pass me two yellow-gold cups from this and that,
Arise, blame me and berate me with this and that
And let a third gleam in a smooth, beardless cheek.
And a third glistening cheek may intercede

And many a tawny gazelle cranes his neck,
How many blond coo for the wild goats
Gamboling among the gazelles sheltering in cover.
Yearning for what is between the gathered grouse

I glanced stealthily from his glances
Wine passed round, but not passed round in cups.
Wandering, not to be turned back by goblets

Wine that, when its bubbles smile as it is mixed,
Wandering, when the bubbles laughed with their mixture
Laughs in the face of the frowning drinker.
I laughed at the frowning drinker's face

And I have drunk, over the heads, an aged wine,
And I drank wine in rounds on the heads
Whose hair-partings had gone gray on a grizzled head.
Aged, though its lees were pure

It had made its non-Arab wine-maker’s feet tremble,
The legs' toes quivered and stumbled
Long ago, and brought about the trembling of heads.
And the heads swayed from the quivering
