O Abu al-Husayn, vicissitudes have left your character untouched,
O Abu al-Hussein, your unmatched morals have returned
Whether help is scarce or fate lends its aid.
Helpers are few, if fate would bring good fortune

Listen—may you live on—to a caller whose watering-place is hard to reach;
I complained to you of a time that returned tyrannical
He called upon you when going to water and returning both defeated him.
With commotions, and an age that was all tears

He complains to you of a time grown oppressive,
Time holds no goodness for man, it only destroys
With alarming rumors, and of an age that is all lessons.
I took precautions against it, and the evil of vipers
ماnot الدهرtime للمرءfor a person الأحيةbut a serpent ذكرٌmale

For a man, time is nothing but a male serpent;
Years have passed over us, truly unjust
May you be protected from it: the worst of serpents is the male.
Meteors that leave nothing behind, neither plant nor seed

شهبٌashen كوالحscowling لاnot تبقيspare ولاand not تذرُleave
Years have passed over us, utterly ruinous,
Yesterday you were wont to extend a hand to us
Ashen and scowling, sparing nothing and leaving nothing.
Like clouds with pearls in outstretched hands

شبهlike الغمامةthe cloud فيamong الأيديthe hands لهاit has دررُcopious rain
In bygone days, you had accustomed us to a helping hand from you,
To a place where we complain neither of care nor sorrow
Like a cloud among hands, pouring rain in abundance,
Cares and sorrows you dispelled for us entirely
فيat حيثa time when لاnot نشتكيwe complain of همّاًworry ولاnor كدراdistress
عطفاhave compassion عليٌّAli علاناovertook us الهمُّworry والكدرُand distress
When we complained of neither worry nor distress.
O you who clothed me in your overflowing blessings
Have compassion, Ali! Worry and distress have overtaken us.
If wrong appeared, wrong can be forgiven
ياO ملبسيyou who clothe me فضلbounty نعماهhis favors التيwhich سلفتcame before
إنif كانthere was ذنبٌa fault بداappeared فالذنبthen the fault يغتفرُis forgivable
O you who clothed me in the bounty of your former favors,
I gathered scattered chicks, parched gullets
If a fault has appeared, that fault can be forgiven.
No water or trees, at the bottom of dark gloom

I have been unable to gather the scattered nestlings,
Of which no news had been raised, you would have mourned
Downy-cropped, with neither water nor trees,
Had you but known, or made inquiries

In the depths of darkness, with no word of them reported.
I cannot draw them away, so leave them be
You would surely have pitied them, had you seen for yourself.
Better for me to show acceptance and patience
لمnot أستطعI could حوَلاًturning away عنهاfrom them فاتركهاand thus leave them

وحبذاand how welcome ليto me ذاthat لوif كانthere were مصطبرُendurance
I could not turn away from them and leave them;
So send your rain clouds to revive us
And how welcome that would be to me, if I could bear it!
And make rain fall, clouds cannot
فابعثso send forth سماءكyour sky مدراراًpouring abundantly لتنعشناto revive us

So send forth your sky in torrents to revive us,
And deliver Abu Hashim to religion's guiding sun
And do, brother of the rain, what rain does not do.
That outshines the stars when the moon appears

And remain safe, Abu Hashim, a sun of guidance for the faith,
Outshining the stars in radiance as long as the moon appears.
