My dear brother, you have excelled in far-roaming verse,

sweeping the open country's plains and uplands.

With it you have outstripped Ziyād and Zuhayr,

and Kaʿb, adding Labīd to their number.

I seek to create a new branch,

but the root forestalls me with a fresh meaning.

If people deny recognizing a meaning

of rare invention, you summon the rhymes as witnesses.

And when you donned poetry's necklace

and hung necklaces around poetry's neck,

parchment pages enfolded such verse of yours that, if

they revived Labīd, he would return a dullard.

    Rhymes—when their seal is broken,

    they emerge, fragrant—fair, secluded maidens.

A vigorous natural gift lavishes them on you,

and carves them into graceful beauties, like palace statues.

You revealed the pearls within their shells,

so they adorned one neck and stripped another bare.

You loosed them like bay steeds,

healing and cleaving the vitals and the jugular.

You readied the arrows of their quivers,

so they drove one fugitive off and sheltered another.

You sent them forth with drooping manes,

as though you had torn their manes away.

You cast them into the desert, smooth-backed,

so off they went, traversing desolate wastes.

    لها نفثات تذيبُ الحديدا

    They spring as vipers at the farthest frontiers;

    their venomous breaths melt iron.

So at times they are a confidant to one nearby,

and at times a messenger to one far away.

Night-roamers, they show you the far-off as near,

and through them you see the nearby as far away.

God bless you—what a poet you are,

    unique, stringing matchless pearls!

For you never cease fertilizing barren language,

which begets a prolific meaning on the page.

Muhammad, were we to witness the age of ash-

Shahīd, we would take you for ash-Shahīd then.

And when you benefited humankind with bounty

all-embracing, we took you for al-Mufīd in that.
