May you be guided, nobles of the clan, to our lost halting-place.

Turn the necks of the pale camels, for the caravan is astray.

Turn them away from ʿĀlij toward Laʿlaʿ,

for I have hopes in the folds of Laʿlaʿ's lower slope.

Their night-halt is either on Abraq al-Ḥimā,

I think—or their watering-place is the water of Abraq al-Khāl.

We descended with them from the sandy slope to a low place

where ruins drank their fill of falling dew.

And we returned with them—travel-worn, exhausted mounts—

their steps lingering, while haste wears the dawn away.

it appeared, and dawn's light is night's slayer.

The camel-driver called to them, and they sped away,

with the rush of desert ostriches overtaken by fright at dawn:

gaunt young she-camels of al-Jadīl's stock,

in a gleaming wasteland that the mirage makes shimmer.

A headstrong rider forced his way through it by night,

somewhat tousled, in a worn ragged cloak, imposing, with trailing robes.

I say to him, who knows his times well:

For there is no state that another will not follow.

For a man may take heed, and a man may lapse.

I add to your knowledge of time, for it

is sorrow for the noble man, if you look, and turmoil.

I trade words with him while the sturdy she-camels strike out,

their stride free over the pebbles of the rippled dune.

    يجعجعها شدٌّ عنيفٌ وارقالُ

    Take heed: do not startle them by undoing their hobbles;

harsh driving and rapid trotting unsettle them.

And among what struck me on the day at Rāma was one gazing

toward the caravan, neck outstretched, long-necked and unadorned,

    delicate at his cloak's edges, with a languid gaze;

so, too, is the languid gaze of the tender narcissus's eye.

He strutted proudly, filling the eye, as though

a statue had appeared before the weary eye.

I say to him, my mouth's moisture spent:

Your lips' moisture gives me life, and your glance kills.

My life for that graceful swayer, as though he were,

when he bends, a supple, quivering spear from al-Khaṭṭ.

when he strides with his slender waist, strutting proudly.

of humankind, yet a lion when gathering his flock.

O wearer of this earring, dangling and fluttering,

your sash is restless, roaming about your waist.

and beauty has lovely detail and a lovely whole.

You are of a people who feast their guest from their great bowls,

lavish feeders when they give, fierce spearmen when they charge.

And when they maneuver, they attain; when they rise, they tower.

they are lions, lions of the forest, and their offspring are lion cubs.

and the flood of their favors rains down upon visitors.

Hush! Do not compare trickles with brimming seas.

Their forbearance outweighs the likes of mountains:

men in the gravest crisis, and mountains in forbearance.

And nothing lures them but the sound of their horses,

when an anklet in the camp entices other folk.

How many a strait's glass vessel of terror have they plunged into,

when terrors clashed within the constricted strait!
