May my soul be ransom for neighbors;
My soul is a sacrifice for the neighbors
Their memory is a fragrance that wafts.
Whose memory stirs fragrances

Well-knit mounts carried them away,
They marched arrayed
Noble camels folding up the earth's rugged tracts.
Folding the meadows of the sad earth

They began trotting with their caravan,
Their steps began to fade
And the heart fades in the caravan's wake.
And my heart faded after their caravan

It stumbles behind their departing caravan;
It fades after their wanderings
God help my heart when it stumbles!
My heart turns to Allah as it fades

Longing blazed within my breast,
Passion flared up in feelings
And a stream of crimson tears poured forth.
And my tears flowed copiously

On the day of battle I was not frightened
The day of turmoil did not alarm me
By blows amid the clash of gleaming swords.
When the swords clashed violently

But a graceful youth struck fear into my heart,
But my heart was disturbed by a young gazelle
From whose eyelids swords are drawn.
Drawing tears from my eyes

If only he knew of my yearning,
If she knew my devotion
His tears would stray, pouring down.
Her tears would copiously flow

Love's anguish kindled within my ribs
I see embers of dawn
Radiant embers that blaze.
Igniting in my soul

Their blaze has never faded there;
Their fire has not died out
Never shall the fire of longing die down!
Never! The fire of passion dies

He came despite the separation,
Despite malice
So the yearning lover's heart rejoiced.
My heart found peace

ولهand for him العقاصthe braids السودblack حجبveils
Veiled for fear of tale-bearers,
Fear of slanderers veiled it
And his black braids served him as veils.
To them belong the black concealments

And the scorpions of his temple began
Now the thorns of his cheek
To guard the rose of his cheek.
Refrain from roses and gardens

Like ants, the myrtle of his sideburns
Like ants fleeing
Creeps over his cheek.
From his gardens and orchard

The keen blade of his glance has never failed
His watchful eyes
On any day, though a sword's edge may fail.
Never ceased when swords clashed violently
