هيفاء ضمَّ عليها درعها الهيفا
In the howdahs among those camel-litters are oryxes,
In the valleys of those sands, lies
A slim-waisted beauty, her shift clasping her slender form.
A graceful beauty, clad in armor

She came, a dune's rounded mound filling her wraps' loose folds,
She came and filled the dunes with nobility
Almost cascading within her cloaks from sheer softness.
Her gentleness almost spills with bounty

The artist traced her figure like a statue,
The painter outlined her image
So that her slender form appeared to me as the letter alif.
Until she incarnated before me in her brilliance

My gaze returns empty-handed from her charms,
When my eyes turn yellow in awe of her beauty
Or else roams the gardens of beauty, plucking blossoms.
Or the gardens of charm are plucked anew

As though her gaze, when she lowers it,
As if her glance lowers to replace
Had taken lovesick languor in place of kohl.
Steadfastness for tenderness

Famished at the waist, well-watered at the hips,
A willowy waist, a shapely bosom
Tall and slender-waisted, well-knit yet delicate.
Radiant, perfectly sculpted and chiseled

I followed her with a falcon's gaze as she reached
I followed her with a falcon’s gaze
The curved dune atop a height in the sanctuary's sands.
As she held the head of a tall, slender palm

So do not breathe the bloom of an untouched garden of hopes,
You won’t smell the fragrance of blossoms meant for joy
Or, if you do, then reap that untouched garden.
Or smell and gather the finest scents

And those who departed from their homelands have crossed
Those who left homelands traveled far
The backs of desert wastes, until they made Najaf their home.
Crossing the seas until settling in Najaf

And wrestled with love unarmed, only to stand exposed:
They battled love unveiled and exposed
Bereft of fortitude, not of passion—unshielded.
Shedding endurance not passion’s cloak

How many dear ones have I clung to
Only for him to turn away when my soul clung to his love.
Until I clung to their love then abandoned

I shall surely rouse the desert's daughters to plod along with me,
I will send the doves to flap around me
At times, while I tread blindly through the night there, without a path.
Flapping in the night wrapped in darkness

A perfect twin molded with generosity
I turned away from him with my hopes, but he did not turn away.
Yet I missed him with my hopes and dreams

Lavish in bounty, disdainful of abundant wealth,
Abundance of wealth belittles sincerity
His appraising eyes regard gold as mere earthenware.
I see the most precious through judging eyes

Spacious is the abode when you fear it
Girded in honor, cloaked in glory.
Hiding in glory covered in honor

Time's successive turns, steadfast of heart, he never changed.
While time persists though different epochs

He never strayed from its straight course, nor turned aside.
Never deviating from its ways

Generous, initiating kindness
