1. أما رأيت الجؤذرا

    إذا رنا أو نظرا

    Have you not seen the young antelope,

    when he gazes or casts a glance?

  2. أجفانه ساحرة

    يا ويل من قد سحرا

    His eyelids are enchanting;

    woe to whoever has been bewitched!

  3. نأخذ عن هاروت أو

    ماروت سحر السحرا

    We learn from Harut or

    Marut the sorcerers' magic.

  4. يمجُّ عن رضابه ال

    ماذي ريقا خصرا

    He lets flow from his saliva—

    pure as honey—cool saliva.

  5. صعَّدتُ فيها نظرا

    فصوبت لي النظرا

    I raised my gaze toward them,

    and they lowered their gaze toward me.

  6. فقلت إذا نظرته

    ما كان هذا بشرا

    So I said when I beheld him,

    "This was no mortal."

  7. هذلا نظرت وجهه

    مهللا مكبرا

    [Unclear opening word] I looked upon his face,

    proclaiming God's oneness and greatness.

  8. مصورا كدميةٍ

    كدميةٍ مصورا

    Fashioned like a figurine,

    like a figurine, fashioned.

  9. فديته من قمرٍ

    فاق سناه القمرا

    May I be his ransom—what a moon,

    whose radiance outshone the moon!

  10. فقم به مهنيا

    وقل به مبشرا

    So rise to congratulate him,

    and speak of him, bringing glad tidings.

  11. هو المجلّي في الورى

    بجلبة مهما جرى

    He is the front-runner among mankind,

    amid a clamor, whenever he races.

  12. ما هو إلا كعبة

    طافت بها كل الورى

    He is nothing but a Kaaba,

    around which all mankind has circled.

  13. يقري بعقر داره

    وداره أمّ القرى

    He offers hospitality at the heart of his home,

    and his home is the Mother of Towns.

  14. فاق الأنام محتداً

    وسوددا ومفخرا

    He surpassed mankind in ancestry,

    and in eminence and glory.

  15. يرفل في ثوب العلى

    لذيله مشمِّرا

    He strides proudly in the robe of high rank,

    tucking up its hem.

  16. قد أصبحت علومه

    للعماء مظهرا

    His learning has indeed become

    a manifestation of obscurity.

  17. إذا بدا مقدّما

    عنه الورى تأخرا

    When he appears in the lead,

    mankind lags behind him.

  18. ذو نسب أوضح من

    لألاء صبح أسفرا

    He has a lineage clearer than

    the radiance of a morning grown bright.

  19. كأنه إذا بدا

    لمقلتي طيف كرى

    When he appears, he seems

    to my eye a vision in slumber.

  20. مدرّب لدى الوغى

    قاد الجياد الضمّرا

    Seasoned in battle,

    he led the noble, lean steeds.

  21. كهف الورى باني العلى

    عالي البنا سامي الذرى

    Mankind's refuge, the builder of glory,

    of lofty structure and towering summits.

  22. أولد مولوداً أتى

    مقدّسا مطهرا

    He fathered a child who came

    sanctified and purified.

  23. فحين لاح وجهه

    أرخت بدرٌ ظهرا

    So when his face shone forth,

    I marked the date: "A full moon appeared."
