Console me, you two, with the gazelles of Dhat al-Ghamim,
Reprove me, O gazelle of the spring-pastures, but make no mention of the gazelles of the sand-dunes;
And turn aside from mention of the gazelles of al-Sarim.
How often there, on that hillside, the driving rain has: shed the new leaves from the branching trees!

سربٍ ينشق علويَّ النسيم
How many herds of gazelles are mine in that ravine,
A herd of wild kine bursting through it when the East-Wind strikes the topmost boughs with its wing;
Roaming freely, inhaling the breeze from on high!
While they pasture there on the soft herbage, picking the fresh young growth, polished smooth like velvet.

Greet, as you pass by the pale gazelles,
Then sport, O breeze of the dawn, in its tangled thicket, but hold back from it, O breath of poison!
The fair-throated one with polished skin.
A negro rose beaming there, like a well-cut onyx upon his smoothly moulded cheek.

وتنحَّي عنه يا ريح السموم
So play with the curls, O east wind,
My sickness was healed when his lips showed their pearls and opening revealed pearl-like teeth.
And keep away from him, O scorching wind.
Thou hast in my heart a meadow for pasture, the meadow of passion not the meadow for rain.

A Black man arose from his mole,
Standing out starkly upon his handsome cheek.

My sickness was confirmed by cheek-down and a mouth;
Both made my excuse clear in a lam and a mim.

In my heart you have a fertile valley:
That is the valley of longing, not the valley of al-Ghamim.
