Beloved of your parents' hearts, ah, depart,
Beloved of her parents, do not go away
And do not depart until the heart is seen departing.
Do not go until the heart sees you leaving

Your stay among us was a fleeting gleam to one watching for rain,
You stayed with us briefly like the twinkling of an eye
As Yemeni lightning flashed with a false promise.
As the Yemeni lightning flashed untruthfully
أقمتyou dwelt بذيin this الواديvalley وأنتand you were صغيرةa little girl
أقمت بذي الوادي وأنت صغيرة

You dwelt in this valley while still a little girl,
You dwelled in the valley while still young
And did not leave until you had roused the wailing women.
And did not move until you dwelled in the bier

And never think the loss of little ones a light affliction,
Do not think little of the folly of youth
For the swift tread of camel feet wears down the withers.
For the inspiration of light feet rouses the striders

أواصلة للَّحد لا بمشقة

وقاطعة أرضا ربىً وسباسبا
O you who reach the grave without hardship,
Joining the people without hardship
And cross the land, hills and open plains,
And crossing a land of pasture and smooth ground

At dawn you breathed the scent of rosy ambergris;
The morning breeze blew the scent of musk
That morning, grieving for you, I breathed the pebble-hurling winds.
With it I blew winds into you that stir up sand

You have indeed left a grandfather; no father of yours is seen
If you left a grandfather who cannot see you
In any state but that you find him wailing.
In a state where he would not find you wailing

The radiant full moon was withdrawn, veiling itself from sight,
The full moons veil their eyes from you as mourners
On the day you chose the earth as your veil.
On a day in which you chose the soil as your veil

O you bound for the grave, be content with a father
Intending for the grave, your father's weeping for you or pouring tears is enough
Who begrudges tears or pours them generously over you.
I will cry for you as long as my tears pour

From my eyes, until the tears run dry.

And if the unweeping eye withholds its water,
I will evoke it as melting tears from the heart
I shall send it forth as tears melted from the heart.
Indeed, because of you, my days have turned gloomy

Indeed, my day, because of you, has turned black, pitch-dark,
As if with them I shrouded a bright white tomb
As though on it I had buried a gleaming, keen-edged sword.

منعمة أرزت نزاراً وغالبا
Indeed, time's vicissitudes have snatched from the house of Ghalib
A blessing that brought prosperity to Nizar and Ghalib
A pampered girl whose loss bereaved Nizar and Ghalib.

Reared by noble people, you would think her
A foster child of Aram, we are her milk-parents
Reared by gazelles passing by in herds.

And how often her face spoke to the radiant full moon!
Stars and planets fell for the one she loved
Fallen is she for whose sake I love the stars, the heavenly lights.

Indeed, he errs who takes a son in place of a daughter,
When the daughters of time have become ardent paramours
When the daughters of time grew earnest in their play.

And they said, “Take comfort; one like her will follow.”
“And who will remain to hope for consequences?”
So I said, “And who will live on to hope for what follows?”
My friend, time is a close companion of man

O friend, know that time is a man's companion,
Until the soul extracts its companion
A dissembler, until it wrests away his soul, taking it along.
And man has no refuge from the arena of death

And no one has an escape from death's arena,
And who can escape from death by fleeing?
And who can escape death by fleeing?

A young man turns aside, avoiding death's path,
And does not bend away from the path of doom bending over
Yet he cannot turn aside and escape the path of doom.
And where is the youth who repelled destruction with his striking

And where is a youth who repelled death with his blows?
And how many struck youths repel adversities
Though many a wiry youth drives back battalions!
So how many archers whose bowstrings are worn out

How many a full-grown camel has had its lower neck crushed!
And stir to not retreat, thus leading calamities
And death hurried on, never turning back, leading calamities.
So whoever contends walking on his own two feet

Some dismount and walk on their own feet,
And whoever flees searching for mounts
And some riders turn away, urging their camels on.

Before it, necks remain bowed low in humiliation,
And how much sought humiliation thus made him mighty
And how often the quarry was abased, making the pursuer mighty.

It has indeed scattered peoples and gathered a great host,
And made it flow like a stream and flow its rivulets
And set it on its course, drawing squadrons along.
And the people are nothing but gazelles, driving them away at dawn

And people are but a small camel herd, chased at dawn;
The supplicant dreaded him so he hastened terrified
The caller shouted at it and scattered it in terror.

With nights following them like scorpions
The nights creep behind them as scorpions.

Oh, would that I did not meet time at peace,
When I did not meet time as an adversary
Though once I did not meet time at war.

And if unjust death would listen to reproach,
I would blame but it does not listen to reproach
I would reproach it, but it hears no reproacher.

And every absent one returns again,
Except death, it did not return to the living coming
Except death, which has not come back to the living.
