After you, no bounty or giver remains,

ever, nor any hope for one who hopes.

O saddler of the pale camels, pressing onward by night,

is there a return once departure has drawn near?

Stop by the vestiges whose ruins have faded,

for they are my heart's desire—those faded ruins.

And halt, even if the hobble is tightened with a wail,

while anguish gnaws at the heart and wails.

I remember them when life was in youth's first bloom,

dewy, tended by the saba and qabul east winds.

In days when pleasure made me sway, as though

wine had set my head spinning at dusk.

And the world struck me with what severs hopes,

and the cord binding me to it was cut.

And after you, I think all things have always been

a passing illusion, an apparition that will vanish.

For you I made peace with death; and if I live

a while, blood-feuds lie between life and me.

After you, only two remain for generosity:

a flood of tears and an emaciated camel's withers.

I shall surely teach the old she-camels their plaintive refrain,

so Shadqam and Jadil keep up their low moans.

And I shall surely teach the great trees their doves' cooing,

so their cooing will surpass the doves'.

A halo flashed before my eye from your brow,

beneath the slabs, as stones were heaped up.

Your people lost you, a single man; it would have pleased them

had you lived for them and a whole tribe died.

Had the two remained together, they would not

    have known separation—Malik and Aqil.

A barrier has come between you and me:

the road's daunting length, a trackless waste, and wide plains.

And the bonds of reunion with you have been severed.

How can I reach you? Where is any way to you?

Where will pitch-black night give way to twilight?

For dawn, stripped of light, is quick to flee.

Your body was not enfolded, hidden in the open ground,

except as a thicket enfolds lions.

If weeping for you is great, or unknown to a learned man,

the learned and ignorant have indeed wept for you.

He whose death notice left the eloquent man faltering,

as though his tongue were hobbled by it.

Through you, I learned a habit never practiced before:

where riding upon tears means descending.

I said, questioning, to the mumbling messenger,

as weeping seized my eye and it streamed:

If you claim to announce the death of glory's life,

may Amir and Salul tear out your tongue.

And a grief that, had it struck the zenith of glory's heaven,

its stars would have fallen, even as they set.

What a noble man he was, devouring death's carcass!

How did he yield to death, himself now prey?

Whoever sets about killing his grief with consolation

among these mortals—my consolation is what lies slain.
