A gazelle from among the Turks has taken me captive.
A slender maiden of Turkish descent enchanted me,
And a soft-voiced fawn has set my tears flowing.
And poured out her tears like gentle rain.

Kohl-dark of eye, night-dark of hair, dusky-lipped,
Her eyes were kohl-dark, her hair jet black,
Graceful of stature, well-knit and slim-waisted.
Slender of form, shapely of body.

The east wind rocks him, and he sways in pride,
The morning breeze swayed her to and fro,
Like a bough of the bān tree swayed by the breeze.
Like strands of yarn gently stirred by the wind.

He sang, and the doves in the branches kept
So the doves in the branches stayed still,
Hovering around his sides in rapture.
Charmed by her graceful movements.

His cheeks seem fragrant,
Her cheeks were radiant,
And the dot of his mole is sweet-scented musk.
And the mole on her cheek was sweet musk.

I seek union with him, while he seeks to shun me.
I desire union with her, and she desires to abandon me.
And how far his aim is from what I seek!
Where are her true feelings amidst what I desire?

I say, while my heart is prey to youthful infatuation,
I speak while my love is plundered by rivals,
And tears from my eyes pour down in streams:
And tears from my eyes pour down in streams.
معاذI seek refuge in الحبlove انthat اصغيI listen للومٍto reproach
اجلُّI hold in esteem مسامعيmy ears واسىًand sorrow مقيمabiding
Love forbid that I should heed reproach!
Woe to love, if I listen to blame -
I hold my ears above it, while sorrow abides.
I turn a deaf ear and establish a firm resolve.

And I have a captive heart on the morning of parting,
My heart since we parted has been in agony,
At the foot of the valley bend, the ruins have saddened it.
Wounded by the feed of sadness.

And an eye that has never ceased pouring tears,
My eyes have not ceased shedding copious tears,
As though its tears were strung pearls.
As if my weeping is a steady, flowing stream.

I pass the night in sleeplessness and longing,
I spent the night sleepless and anguished,
The stars converse with me in its deep darkness.
With the stars keeping me company in my vigil.
