My passion for the people of al-ʿUdhayb abides.

My patience is gone, and my heart is wounded.

My heart is tormented by the long separation,

And indeed, the torment of lovers is painful.

The call of passion draws me toward you,

And sorrow and worries hold me back from you.

If I were to grant my soul its desire,

I would be gazing toward those faces.

My heart always beholds you, despite the distance,

And longs for nearness, though nearness is no small matter.

And I, in the faithfulness you have known,

Though sorrows multiply within me, remain steadfast.

My longing for you keeps me sleepless, so I turn back,

And my passion within me holds me down and holds me fast.

May God guard loved ones who struck me with their distance,

Though they knew that parting is grievous.

My tormentress, how long this shunning—until when?

My life has passed while I seek union with you.

You withheld union from us, though you are of

The branches of generosity—and the son of the noble is noble.

So be generous and tender, or be unjust and torment me:

For the heart abides only in love of you.

May God strike the days of parting with their like,

So they may pity my plight, for the ignorant are deeply unjust.
