هلwhether بعدَafter سكانِهاtheir inhabitants قلبيmy heart المشوقُyearning سلاfound solace
Ask, you two, the dwellings, the ruins, and the encampments:
I asked the abandoned camps and ruins, and the traces,
Has my yearning heart found solace since their inhabitants left?
Has after its inhabitants my longing heart asked, how they are?
كيفَhow السلوfinding solace وماand not زالتceased محاسنَهمtheir beauties
فيin مقلَتيmy eye وإنand even if شطّgrew distant النوىseparation مثَلاimages
How could I find solace, when their beauties still remain
How is the night getting along, and their beauty still remains
as images in my eye, though separation stretches far?
In my eyes, even if the affection has been exemplarily severed,

They struck my heart with sorrows after their departure,
They have burdened my heart with sorrows after them,
and burdened it with ailments despite the great distance.
And burdened it with yearning from afar, with illnesses,

I had feared a spasm, with which you have been stricken,
I used to fear a separation I was afflicted with,
and before our parting I was fearful and apprehensive.
And before the parting I was fearful and anxious,

No food has tasted good to me since my beloved left, nor
No food tasted good after the beloved, nor
have sweet drinks tasted sweet since the travelers departed.
Were drinks sweet after those who revived my flames,

I entrust to God whoever their rising star
was attended by happiness and good fortune.

You left after you except embers that kill?
