Whatever I forget, I will not forget their march on the morning they set out

Toward battle, with earnest resolve and vigorous effort.

Of lions from the lair upon a herd of fawns.

Each holding fast to truth, committed

To truthfulness, marked by goodness, renowned.

So you see none among them but a man rushing forward,

Like a torrent, dashing the doomed against the mangled.

Each sees glory—all glory—in his death

By the sword, lest he suffer a captive's humiliation.

And when Death gave freely, seeking hospitality, they fell

Upon the earth, some with throats slit, others stabbed in the neck.

A battle—the Creator rewarded their endeavors

In it; and how many an endeavor goes unrewarded!

Absolved of sins, they were purified

    Of them by martyrdom's blood—what a purification!
