Ah, how lovely a time that passed in union—how

sweet it was! Rather, how lovely is Jabaʿ!

How many a noble-born woman amid the vineyards, to us

freely granted union—yet piety held me back.

And how often the eye watched, between the paths, a full moon in the darkness,

longing for my heart’s desire while the people had fallen asleep.

And how often he became my drinking companion, with the wine from

his mouth, while my reprover would not relent over him.

And how often I kissed his front teeth, with no witness to the

kissing and embracing other than God.

So will my days grant reunion, or

will those places embrace us for part of a day,

with the full moons who, behind their veils,

hid themselves from us, yet rose on the horizon of the heart?
