تَقْوَىthe piety of المُتيَّمِthe love-stricken one لَوْعَةٌburning longing وغرامُand passion
O age of piety, depart; no blame rests on you.
The time of meeting is strange, do not blame me
The piety of the love-stricken is burning longing and passion.
The passion of the infatuated is agony and love

Some hope for Eden through ascetic devotion;
Who hopes for bliss through devoutness
For people follow different paths of love.
People are divided in the ways of passion

My ardent love for Muhammad and his family
And my adherence to Muhammad and his progeny
Is my share; farewell, all other shares!
Is my fortune, and greetings to all fortunes

إنّindeed الملامةreproach فيin الغرامpassionate love مُدامaged wine
Tell those who reproach me over them, ‘Well done!’
Tell the coquettes among them you have done well
For in passionate love, reproach is aged wine.
For blame in passion is everlasting

You tried through reproach to uproot a love
You have tried to remove a love with coquetry
On which drinking companions grew drunk on the day of the address.
Then regretted it the day of discourse

I drank it unmixed, as love willed;
I have deserted it out of desire's caprice
And its admixture—how delightful!—was melody.
And its temperament, oh the melodies!

There the drink pleased me, and there was
For there I found the wine sweet, no nonsense in its cup
No idle talk or sin in its cup.
Nor sins

If you ask me for imitation in love,
If you seek my precedent in passion from me
For one like me, imitation in it is forbidden.
Then for the like of me precedent therein is forbidden

Proofs became clear and stood confirmed for my heart;
The proofs became clear to my heart and eloquent
Ailments barred you from grasping them.
Maladies barred you from realizing them

I beheld them, the sun falling short of their radiance,
And I saw her while the sun is less than her radiance
While you lay asleep, your eyelids wounded.
When you are bleary-eyed sleepers

I smelled the fragrance of their discourse and heard it
And I smelled the fragrance of her words and heard them
As pearls that make pearls jealous, strung in order.
Pearls that change pearls and compose poems

God be praised for them and the graces bestowed uniquely on them,
By God, an integrity granted exclusively to them
Lavished by the days, though themselves rainless clouds.
The days were lenient with it while they are strict

And the times' noble deeds are brief regarding them
Of them, as do their tongues and pens.
As are their tongues and pens

The abode of delight—and Islam shall be his faith’?
Abode of bliss and his faith is Islam

This is deep-rooted nobility; seek refuge in it,
This is the honorable nobility, so hold fast to it
Not in anything else, for all else is illusion.
Not what is other, for it is delusions

And carry out what you can in glorifying them
A mighty people whom the Book has exalted.
A people the Scripture extols as great

And direct the happy endeavor for their excellent son Muhammad
The face of praise; your days will be happy.
The days will be joyous for you

He whose beauties of light have become clear
The light of prophethood is radiant and ever-smiling.
The light of prophecy radiant with joy

Sublime is He who created him of sheer beauty
As though wombs had never contained him.
As if the wombs did not carry him

Do not wonder, for the beauty of the lords of mankind
Is the foundation of our blessed master's beauty.
Is the beauty of our happy master enduring

Nor ignorantly deem him the midmorning sun,
Or think it ignorance of the sun of daybreak
For darkness overtakes it when sunset undoes its light.
While over the dusk it has darkness

Or wrong it by making it a sea of limpidity
For the sea is but the seepage and outpouring of fingertips.
While the sea is but a bracelet and anklet

And if he contained all knowledge, but rather
From their house that eminent scholars received them.
From their house the flags have gotten it

So whenever you come to draw pure knowledge from them,
So when do you want the choice of knowledges from them
Drink, for after this draught no burning thirst remains.
Then drink, and after drinking there is no delirium

And draw the guarded secret from their breaths,
And take the guarded secret from their breaths
For they alone, of all humankind, are noble.
For they alone, not people, are generous

As long as the wind of love sets still things stirring,
And doves warble above the branches.
