    حُكْمٌ جرى حتى على الحكّام

    All humankind is a target for death's arrow;

a decree that has fallen even upon rulers.

How can there be permanence—when everything perishes—

for a lodger in a dwelling that does not endure?

So do good for yourself; you will find it when

mortals sober up from their drunkenness through sleep.

And shake your hand free of this abode, which

has bewitched those of sound judgment with dreams.

And it is this that has admonished; a sufficient preacher for you is

the death of learning and the departure of the luminaries.

Look at this tomb and what it holds:

a scholar, a luminary, and an overflowing sea.

A sea of rigorous inquiry, whose pearls were strung

around the neck of manuscript pages by the fingertips of pens.

A treasury of meticulous study—how many ornaments it holds

from the fair figure of legal opinions and rulings!

This is Imam Husayn, the luminary who

strung piety and learning together in splendid order.

O confluence of the two seas, O Barnaz, whom

have you left as a light in the deep darkness?

You were indeed the lamp of guidance and its dawn,

and the beauty on the face of the days' gatherings.

Though you have vanished from the eyes' sight, you still remain

between the ribs, in the most cherished place.

May the gratitude you left behind gladden you, and what

you sent ahead as treasure for attaining your goal.

No wonder he attains his wishes through grace; and in

his chronogram, bliss came at the close.
