Stop with us by the Rock of the Night Journey,

Let us listen to its murmuring in this expanse.

It is a rock, and rocks have speech,

Of the nature of inspiration and suggestion.

    فيه مجد يسير نحو الفناء

    In it is spirit, and in it abundant knowledge;

In it is glory moving toward extinction.

The genius of existence journeyed by night to it,

Hastening like lightning in the darkness [apparently intended; the source reads 'to me'].

My companion said to me, having lost patience:

'Where could rock find the speech of the eloquent?

You hope for speech from inanimate matter,

And human speech is like a clamor.'

I said, 'Wait, and listen with me to whispers,

Like the buzzing of mosquitoes at dusk.'

He said, 'Truly, I have indeed heard—so what,

I wonder, is their secret? Is there any hope?'

The voice began to resolve into meanings

That compelled our ears to listen closely.

Then it said, 'What are you two doing in my presence,

After you two betrayed the pledges of loyalty?

My companion brought you something: had you preserved it,

And followed it, openly and in secret,

You would have triumphed over every enemy,

And spread the landmarks of the radiant faith,

And the forms of injustice would have vanished through your justice,

And the people would have lived in prosperity,

And a wave of happiness would have spread through the universe,

And the seedbeds of hardship would have vanished,

And the people would have become brothers, and peace would have spread,

And the page of aggression would be folded away.

But you were deluded, like others besides you, and followed

The soul's sickness in passion and ostentation.

And you turned away from guidance and inclined

Toward pleasures of finery and women.

And you trifled with your religion and split apart

In discord—and that is calamity enough for you.

And thus, today, you have become scattered,

Each people walking in blind confusion.

And you became submissive after enduring glory,

And submitted to the authority of enemies.

So leave me in my solemn dignity and majesty,

And leave my precinct, for heaven's sake!

Remembrances benefit only those who have within them

Hearts, or who are among the living.'
