Al-Ra’y magazine, O finest of magazines,

To you, from an admirer, the purest greetings.

You came like a beautiful maiden, whose adornment

Is her lofty character among the young women.

You came as proof of a dawn for our awakening,

Whose rising lights the blackness of gloomy nights.

So we see truth in daylight, through that which

Lifts the veils from people’s eyes,

And defeats oppression along with the specter of darkness, so

We no longer hear any mention of enmities.

Then we shall remember the new generation’s helping hand,

Which surpassed Hatim’s two hands in doing good deeds.

Forward, O Al-Ra’y of youth, and do not

Fear defeat; be steadfast through calamities.

For life is nothing but a battlefield,

Where the brave man wins—the one who endures for hours.

You stirred a dormant feeling within me, so it emerged

Against my will, and I brought it forth in a few verses.

And the demon of my poetry would not obey me,

    Nor yield anything but sighs.

What, then, brought the accursed one? I think he

Has read Al-Ra’y, or some magazines,

By a critic who sees no benefit in criticism

    Unless it is devoted purely to knowledge and the self;

Or a rebellious writer who calls the young to

    The best of deeds and the abandonment of misguided ways;

Or one who alludes to jests mingled with

Seriousness, playfully teased by the sweetness of banter.

And who are they? They are indeed students at a school.

This is triumph in the future to come.
