Why set out tomorrow morning, and where shall I go at evening?

Alas for the morning—it has carried off my own dawn.

They stormed upon us without warning,

O parting of dear companions—what winds!

It rose upon us with sickness and separation,

And swooped like a treacherous ravager.

It toyed with the idol of the eyes and made

The apple's twin the color of yellow wars-dye.

They took him away like a rose forsaken by the dew,

And went off with him, a specter among specters.

O caller of my name—may I be your ransom as you call!

My burning lament returned his call.

O healer of the sorrowful, you mended my wound,

And at your parting, what wounds you made bleed!

I bowed my head before sundering separation,

And lowered my wing before marauding fate.

The faithful one has gone: no radiant smile

Is mine wherever I am, nor any sunlit day.

The wretched one returned to his old misery,

And an effacer erased happiness from the world.

Alas for returning to a desolate place,

With grim courtyards and deserted open spaces.

In every corner is a calling phantom,

And a reminder of your radiant brow.

And one pillowed like a wraith, awake all night—

I spent the evening watching over him with a sleepless eye.

I go on jesting with him to make him forget the illness,

And say in a jubilant burst of joy:

    ستزول عند تبلُّج الإصباحِ

    “Do not despair over an illness bound to the night;

It will vanish with the brightening of dawn.”

I hide my fears from him, though they are grave,

    Written in my betraying eye.

    Discovered through my stoicism, revealed

Through my concealment, revealed by my jests.

I resisted the illness in him, as it strove to prevail,

    Defiant of guides and counselors.

What raging nights I spent awake,

Amid what agonies, and what struggle!

The assailing illness shattered my firm resolve,

And bent my defiance and checked my unruliness.

And patience fails, and the unseen is hidden,

And his healing lies in the grasp of the Bountiful Giver.

And it overwhelmed the angel pillowed among us,

With a lily's frailty and the delicacy of daisies.

O you who departed amid the east wind's moans,

And left amid the spreading trees' answering wails,

The lightning bearing you moves on, then vanishes,

Hurrying between hills and between broad plains.

Alas for life today—where is its beauty?

And what are my failure and success in it for?

You are the one who gave life to a dead man,

    Solitary on earth, without ambition.

You shone amid its darkness and its clouds,

    And rose like flashing lightning.

So return to me, for you have left me a wanderer,

    Immersed in tears and sorrows.
