Whose are those languid eyes, so faded?

And who is the phantom, head on a pillow, borne along?

O sorrow of my heart in its youthful days,

and my eye's sleeplessness in the earliest nights,

My eyes denied it, yet my heart left no room

in its beats for doubt or interpretation.

O ailing angel, awaken, and you will find

the one who pines for you, ailing among your visitors.

On the day of return, how long I waited for you, weeping,

and sent my dreams to you as a messenger.

I spoke about you, leaving no one unaddressed,

and asked until I left no one unquestioned.

And I drowned in beautiful hope, leaving out

no sweet imagining, nor anything hoped for.

And in my despair I wept for you, leaving

no tear still to be shed at the rims of my eyes.

And I question hidden time, in the hope that it

    may relieve a thirst—a thirst—or slake a burning thirst.

    O time, whose secrets

    minds cannot reach,

by God, tell me: is there not beyond you a moment

that brought a forsaking friend and a friend together?

It is a moment, and it is life; whoever lives

after it will find life superfluous.

    ودنا الصباح ولم أزل مشغولا

    Darkness passed, while you filled my thoughts;

morning drew near, and I remained absorbed.

And day came upon a youth who had grown

weary of the affairs the day had brought.

And so life grows wearisome if it is emptied

of someone who eases its burden as it is borne.

Toil upon toil, and I gain nothing

    but unceasing exhaustion and wasting.

The rust of events changed the radiance in

my thinking, and clouded my polished mind.

And the succession of storms on youth's horizon

left me no clear sky I could see as beautiful.

Precious youth has gone, and a spreading tree has vanished,

which spread for us fidelity's sheltering shade.

Those days when my speech failed me before you,

and when I fell silent, everything was said.

And my love surged within me; if a word flowed

through my mouth, it stumbled shyly on my lips.

O you at whose spring I alighted to drink of love,

and who made me taste it, shattering and ruinous.

What I tasted did not frighten me; I feared that

I would find you unaware of the buried malady.

For the heart's bitterest suffering is a passionate longing

that blazed, while what lay buried within it remained unknown.
