The people neither went with news nor came,

Nor is there news for your heart of your Layla.

Spring forsook our nights and abandoned them,

And the garden lies desolate: no shade, no water.

O healer of sickness, sickness has undone me.

Is there no quenching for this murderous thirst?

Nor can a heart's bird come to rest, nor

Can a frightened vessel find anchorage at the shore.

Within me is a winter sky that brings no rain,

Black and barren in the recesses of the soul,

Mute at times, tempestuous at times,

And, though mute, it does not deceive my judgment.

And how could the dozing desert deceive me,

While the watercourses slumber across the desert?

Was it you who called, or a voice I imagined?

So, with illusion's leave, I listen for you.

At your call—if only my soul had the means to fly!

And how can exhaustion lift the wounded?

    لهم به صخب عالٍ وضوضاءُ

    The people scattered about the shore and gathered;

There they made a loud clamor and commotion.

And others were listless in their places,

As though they were worn-out beasts in the sands of the shore.

They are humankind before time corrupted them,

    And before hatred challenged love.

They would be spacious as the sky above the sea.

The sun of that day shone and blazed,

Like red flames on the horizon.

    A patch of shade—the heart's shade—was sweet

To us, while the surroundings were scorched by heat.

What are they to me? You are my whole world,

And all it holds; through you my heart wants nothing.

Were it eternity, it would be no more than a year,

And a dream's span is but a doze beneath the eyelids.

I gaze at you, while fear assails me,

And turn away, lowering my gaze from you.

If I speak, words are of no avail,

And if I am silent, silence is disclosure.

And any word at all—the wind will carry it,

And the shore repeats it, and the horizon echoes.

And how does the east wind know we are lovers?

When we awoke, we saw the sun inclining

Toward sunset, and parting could not be delayed.

Her locks turned gray, and her braids came undone,

Ash-gray and yellow at the hour of farewell.

A bleeding twilight walked toward her and dyed her,

As though it were henna on the trailing ends of her hair.

O you who breathed passion's heat upon my neck,

As tawny wine breathed in the goblets,

And you into whose mouth I breathed passion's heat,

Yet I was not quenched; this quenching brings thirst.

Distance does not remove you from my thoughts,

Nor will darkness hide you from my eyes.
