    The people neither went away with news nor came,

    nor has your heart any tidings of your Layla.

    وأقفرَ الروضُ لا ظلٌّ ولا ماءُ

    Spring forsook our nights and left them;

    and the garden grew desolate: no shade, no water.

    O healer of illness, illness has undone me.

    Is there no quenching for this murderous thirst?

    Nor can the bird of a heart settle, nor

    is there anchorage at the shore for a frightened convoy.

    Within me is a winter sky that bears no rain,

    black and barren in the recesses of the soul.

    Tempestuous at times, mute at times,

    yet it does not deceive my judgment when it is mute.

    For how often the night lay still, save for a restless whisperer,

    as though it were a breath forever walking through the night.

    Was it you who called, or a voice I imagine?

    So I listen to you with the ear of illusion.

    At your call—if only my soul had the means to fly!

    And how can exhaustion lift the wounded?

    For whom would I rise and return to life? These are images

    that do not captivate, statues and costumes,

    and a display empty of meaning, and names,

    ever since Asma told us of this parting.

    O night, every day is dead; but when

    you call, it rises, as resurrection restores life.

    هيهاتَ ينسيه إصباحٌ وإمساءُ

    No day spent in your love wears away;

    no morning or evening could ever make it forgotten.

    The meeting that day was sweet for two, and they withdrew alone:

    a young man with a visible illness, and a beauty.

    Her beauty is the world's repentance, and her dignity

    a white atonement for the sins of Time.

    And her hair was coal; its rivulets flowed,

    almost shining with beauty, though they were black.

    لهَا وللعاجِ خلفَ الليلِ إغراءُ

    Some locks slept within it, and others flowed loose;

    there was allure in them, and in the ivory behind the night.

    The sun of that day glowed and blazed,

    as though it were red flames on the horizon.

    لهم به صخبٌ عالٍ وضوضاءُ

    People scattered about the shore and gathered;

    there they raised loud clamor and uproar.

    And others were languid in their places,

    as though they were spent creatures on the sands of the shore.

    لا هُم أُسَارى ولا فيهم أرِقَّاءُ

    They freed themselves from life's shackles and went forth;

    they were not captives, nor were any among them slaves.

    For a day, Time relinquished its will

    and its rule; so whatever they wished in life was theirs.

    They were humankind before time corrupted them,

    and before hatred challenged love.

    لكن حضارةُ هذا العالمِ الداءُ

    They were not created with ailments inherent in themselves;

    but this world's civilization is the disease.

    Souls grew cramped with grudges; had they remained unspoiled,

    they would be as spacious as the sky above the sea.

    What have I to do with them? You are the whole world to me,

    and all it holds; my heart is enriched by you.

    ومدةُ الحلمِ بالجفنينِ إغفاءُ

    Had I an eternity, it would be no longer than a brief doze;

    and a dream's span beneath the eyelids is a doze.

    I gaze at you, while fear assails me,

    and I turn away, my gaze averted from you.

    وإن سكتُّ فإنَّ الصمتَ إِفشاءُ

    When I speak, speech is of no avail;

    and if I keep silent, silence is disclosure.

    My heart loved you with a love of which I disclosed no

    secret, nor is its concealment possible.

    And any passing thought—the wind carries it,

    and the shore recounts it, and the horizon is echoes.

    O night, who taught the birds our story?

    And how does the east wind know that we are lovers?

    When we awoke, we saw the sun inclining

    toward farewell, and parting could not be delayed.

    Its forelocks grayed, and its braids came undone,

    ash-gray at the hour of farewell, and yellow.

    A bleeding twilight walked toward it and dyed it,

    as though it were henna on the hair's trailing ends.

    O you who breathed passion's heat upon my neck,

    as tawny wine breathes in the goblets,

    and you into whose mouth I breathed passion's heat,

    yet my thirst was not quenched; this quenching brings thirst.

    Distance does not remove you from my thoughts,

    nor will darkness hide you from my eyes.
