Tell the miser, when his watering place is hard to reach:

O you who withhold water from me, how can you withhold it?

Has your beauty been beguiled by having immortality for its stream,

and wondrous magic for its source?

O star imprisoned in an orbit,

scattering its glory there, squandering it!

Beauty cannot live forever unless it is deified

and exalted by poetry of the highest order.

I am your martyr, and the heart that laughs when

you make it bleed, and sings when you tear it apart.

Is there a day of favor from you, begrudged by time,

whose anticipation has taxed my imagination and worn me out?

    أراه في الوهم أحياناً وأسمعُه

    How often I have spent the night awake, listening for its footstep;

I sometimes see it in fancy, and hear it.

And you, on the horizon of illusions, are a phantom of youth

that soared high, its place too subtle for minds to grasp.

    أظل كالنفس الحيران أتبعُه

    You are like the drunken breeze, roaming free;

I keep following it like a bewildered soul.

Come, and draw near with a day when we do not feel

our bodies, in a serenity we shall not squander.

Yet I feel you flowing in the very core of my blood.

You are life, and you are the whole universe.
