O you whose absence is cruel, how can you draw away?

I am a stranger at heart, alone.

If today betrays my hope of you, I say, 'Tomorrow.'

Yet how far tomorrow is from me, and from meeting you!

    تكاد فيها الظنون ترتعد

    Indeed, tomorrow is an abyss to its beholder;

    within it, conjectures almost tremble.

I peer into its depth, questioning it:

'Has eternity hidden its image in you?'

O you who touch the wound, what has been done

to it by compassionate lips and a hand?

Flame fills my ribs, and the strangest thing about it

is that I cool myself with this blaze.

O you who left me where we used to sit,

and where my melodious heart sang to you,

I gaze at the people in their throngs:

have events made them wretched, or have they been happy?

Have they scattered, or have they gathered because of them?

And have they descended into the hollows, or ascended?

I am a stranger; come, O my solace,

for in their throng I have no one.
