O you who asked for poetry, take my greeting,

and my love, O my soul and O my Dawhiyya.

Is a detailed account of what I hold within wanted? And how many

a heart has its story summed up in a single word!

But poetry's art is roses from loved ones,

given as a gift; so take my poem—rather, my rose.

And poetry is a flourishing garden, and its fragrance

wafts to us from the fragrance of Paradise.

And I see you as a garden of tenderness and beauty.

Does one garden offer eloquence to another?

So to you, O most precious beloved, O my daughter,

and dearest of those for whom my heart yearns,

a keepsake from your loving father, entrusted to your care.

And if you remember me, that is my wish.

And handwriting is like a portrait; if one day

my likeness grows distant, turn toward the cherished trace.
