O my prince, parting draws near,

    and you are still withholding.

Listen to me, look, and leave your hand

    in mine awhile.

Ah, for this right hand of yours,

and what we were given to drink from it!

    It soothed us with hopes,

    so we drank, thirsting.

Then it made the rounds with death,

so we came willingly to drink.

Ah, for a cruel hand, brimming

    with frailty and softness!

O enchanting fingers that have given

    the fates dominion over us!

    My lip, wronged and thirsting,

    has gone utterly mad.

And now it is as though my hand

    bore a buried vengeance,

    longing to hold you captive,

a prisoner with it for a lifetime:

a bird that found upon its palm

    a safe nest,

    and a sacred ray,

guiding the light, making it clear.
