O my nation, how many tears brim in our eyes!
O my nation, how many tears are in the corners of our eyes!
Do we weep for your two martyrs, or weep for our hopes?
Do we weep for your two martyrs, or for our hopes?

O my nation, if we weep today, forgive us:
O my nation, if we weep today, forgive us.
in our helplessness, some tragedies lie beyond our hands.
In our weakness, some tragedies lie beyond our power.

Alas for the squadron, striding proudly in its stately formation,
Ah, for the squadron, strutting proudly in its procession!
and for the eagles setting out at dawn from their eyries!
And for the eagles, setting forth in the morning above the eyries!

They cried, “Fog!”—but the giants paid it no heed,
They said, "Fog!" But the titans paid no heed—
for they attain the heights only by sacrificing themselves.
Who attain the heights only by making sacrifices.

The English Channel marveled at them when they came into view,
And the English Channel marveled at them when they appeared,
looking out over its bewildered wave-crests.
Looking down upon its bewildered wave-crests.

France received them with her radiant welcome,
So France welcomed them with her smiles,
rewarding valor with roses or fragrant basil.
Rewarding valor with roses or fragrant flowers.

“The eagles!” they cried; the people sprang up and remembered
They said, "The eagles!" The people sprang up and remembered
an eagle of their own who filled the world with battlefields.
An eagle of their own who filled the world with battlefields.

The Seine rang with acclaim when our vanguard appeared—
And the Seine cheered as our vanguard appeared,
a vanguard of glory, sons of our valley.
The vanguard of glory, from among the sons of our valley.

Safety was at hand; the squadron arrived, and they found missing
The hour of safety came; the squadron arrived, and they missed
two eagles whom they thought had merely tarried awhile.
Two eagles whom they thought had been delayed a while.

But it was death that had held the pair back;
But it was death that delayed them, for they both,
when glory called, the two had hastened to answer.
When glory called, had hastened to answer.
فليبكso let him weep منwhoever شاءwishes وليُشبعand let him fill محاجرهhis eye sockets

Then let whoever wishes weep and fill his eyes to overflowing,
So let whoever wishes weep, and fill his eyes with tears;
and let grief lament as much as it wishes, as our mourner.
And let our mourner sob as much as grief desires.

He mourns his beloved, and she mourns the loss of her only one—
The beloved weeps, and she weeps for the loss of her only one—
the one after whom she sees neither worldly life nor faith.
She who sees, after him, neither world nor faith.

A little while, and then the shedder of tears finds solace;
A little while, then the one who sheds tears forgets them.
tears ward off nothing of the afflictions that assail us.
Tears ward off none of our misfortunes.

Whenever calamity strikes, our herald cries:
So whenever calamity strikes, our crier calls out:
“We are your ransom, Egypt; may we never cease to be sacrifices—
Your ransom, O Egypt—may we ever remain sacrificial offerings!

for you, Egypt: this star extinguished,
Your ransom, O Egypt: this star, extinguished,
this eagle burned, this lion pierced.”
And the eagle, burned, and the lion, pierced.
