ياO ساعةhour الحسراتsorrows والعبراتand tears
أعَصَفتِdid you rage أمor عَصَفَraged الهوىlove بحياتيthrough my life
O hour of sorrows and tears!
O hour of regrets and tears
Was it you, or love, that ravaged my life?
Did you ravage or did love ravage my life?
ماwhat مَهرَبيmy escape ملأfilled الجحيمُhell مسالكيmy paths
وطَغىand surged علىover سُبُليmy roads وسَدَّand blocked جهاتيmy directions
Where can I flee? Hell has filled my paths,
Hell filled my paths
and surged over my roads and blocked every direction.
And exceeded my ways and blocked my sides
منfrom أيwhich حصنٍfortress قدalready نزعتyou tore out كوامناًhidden ones
منamong أدمعيmy tears استعصمنthey sought refuge خلفbehind ثباتيmy steadfastness
From what fortress have you torn those hidden
From which fortress were my secrets extracted?
tears of mine that sought refuge behind my steadfastness?
With my tears did I seek protection behind my composure
حطمتyou shattered منsome of جبروتهنtheir proud might فقلنso they said ليto me
أَزِفَdrew near الفراقparting فقلتُso I said ويحكwoe to you هاتيbring it forth
You broke down their proud might, and they said to me:
They broke me with their tyranny and said to me
“Parting is near!” I said, “Woe to you—bring it forth!”
Farewell is near, I said woe to you, give it to me
أأموتshall I die ظمآناًthirsty وثغركwhile your mouth جدوليmy stream
وأبيتand spend the night أشربdrinking لهفتيmy yearning وولوعيand my ardor
Shall I die thirsty, while your mouth is my stream,
Shall I die thirsty while your stream is my river?
and spend the night drinking my yearning and my ardor?
Shall I spend the night while my fervor and agony are my company?
جفَّتdried up علىupon شفتيmy lips الحياةُlife وحُلمُهاand its dream
وخيالُهاand its vision منfrom ذلكthat الينبوعspring
Life and its dream have dried upon my lips,
Life has dried up on my lips and its dreams
along with its vision from that spring.
And its imagination from that spring
قدindeed هدَّنيhas crushed me جزعيmy anguish عليكover you وأدّعيand I claim
أنيthat I am غداةَon the morning of البَينِparting غيرُnot جَزوعdistraught
My anguish over you has crushed me, yet I claim
My anguish over you has led me
that on the morning of parting I am not distraught.
To claim that the day after separation I shall not despair
وأريدand I wish أُشبعto sate ناظريَّmy eyes فأنثنيthen I turn aside
كيso that أستبينَكI see you clearly منfrom خِلالamid دموعيmy tears
And I wish to feast my eyes, then turn aside,
And I wanted to saturate my eyes so I leaned
to see you clearly through my tears.
In order to discern you through my tears
هانwould be bearable الردىdeath لوif أنthat قلبكyour heart دارِaware
أأموتshall I die مغترباًfar from home وصدرُكwhile your breast داريmy home
Death would be bearable, if only your heart knew;
Disgrace is nothing if your heart would be my abode
shall I die far from home, while your breast is my home?
Shall I die estranged while your bosom is my abode?

O you who raised the edifice of my soul so high,
O you who erected the structure of my soul lofty
radiant on every side with light,
Adorned on its sides with lights

today I have a soul like a pallid shadow
Today I have a soul like a pale shadow
in a temple whose walls are giving way.
In a temple with walls in surrender
لوif فيwithin الضلوعthe ribs أجلتِyou let roam عينكyour eye أبصرتyou would see

If you let your eye roam within my ribs, you would see
If you looked into my ribs you would see
a shattered soul weeping over a shattered temple.
Collapsed, crying over the collapsed one
لاdo not تسأليask عنabout ليلِthe night of أمسِyesterday وخطبهand its ordeal
وخذيand take جوابَكyour answer منfrom شقيّa wretch واجمsilent with grief
Do not ask about last night and its ordeal;
Do not ask about last night and its tribulations
and take your answer from a silent wretch.
And take your answer from my misery and pain
طالتgrew long مسافتُهits span عليَّfor me كأنهاas though it were
أبدٌan eternity غليظhard القلبof heart ليسnot براحمmerciful
Its span dragged on for me, as though it were
Its distance from me was prolonged as if
an eternity, hard-hearted and merciless.
It were endless, unkind and unmerciful
وكأننيand as though I were طفلٌa child بهاwithin it وخواطريand my thoughts
أرجوحةٌa swing فيamid لجّهاits deep waters المتلاطمsurging
And as though I were a child within it, and my thoughts
As if I am a child in it and my worries
a swing amid its surging depths.
Are a swing in its turbulent eddy
عانيتُهاI endured it والليلُwhile night لعنةُa curse كافرٍan unbeliever
وطويتُهاand I traversed it والصبحُwhile dawn دمعةa tear نادمa penitent
I endured it, while night was an unbeliever's curse,
I suffered it and the night is the curse of a disbeliever
and traversed it, while dawn was a penitent's tear.
And I folded it and the dawn is the tear of a regretful one
