How many a night, while terror walked in the darkness,

How many nights has terror walked in the darkness

And horror lay spread across the lands,

And horror spread over the horizons

أغفيت في كنفي وفي ظل الكرى

أغفيت في كنفي وفي ظل الكرى

كالطفل في أمنٍ مِنَ الأوجاع

كالطفل في أمنٍ مِنَ الأوجاع

You dozed in my shelter and in the shade of slumber,

You have slept in my embrace and in the shade of ruin

Like a child, safe from pain!

Like a child resting safely from pain

يا ربِّ قد وهت العصا واستأثرت

يا ربِّ قد وهت العصا واستأثرت

غيرُ الليالي بالقويِّ الباع

غيرُ الليالي بالقويِّ الباع

O Lord, the staff has weakened, and claimed

O Lord, my staff has weakened and only

By the nights’ vicissitudes is the strong of arm.

The nights retain any strength

فانظر إلى الحمل الوديع ووقّه

فانظر إلى الحمل الوديع ووقّه

شر النفوس وفتنة الأطماع

شر النفوس وفتنة الأطماع

So look upon the gentle lamb, and shield him

So look upon the gentle lamb and protect it

From the evil of souls and the lure of greed.

From the evil of souls and greed's temptation

نضّر له الدنيا ومدَّ ربيعها

نضّر له الدنيا ومدَّ ربيعها

وانشره مؤتلقا بكل شعاع

وانشره مؤتلقا بكل شعاع

Make the world bloom for him, and prolong its spring,

Make the world blossom for it and lengthen its spring

And spread it, radiant with every ray.

Spread it out basking in every sunbeam

واجعل له الأيام ظلاً وارفاً

واجعل له الأيام ظلاً وارفاً

وخرير أنهارٍ وخصب مراعي

وخرير أنهارٍ وخصب مراعي

And make his days a wide-spreading shade,

And make its days a vast shade

And the murmur of rivers, and the lushness of pastures.

With the murmur of rivers and fertility of pastures
