    O exalted, all-forgiving, ever-pardoning one,

Does the summit pity the weakness of the slopes?

Your crown is immersed in light, and at

Your throne every full-voiced star has sung.

And what are the bowed heads of the hills

Beside a head above the lofty towers?

    And what are autumn leaves,

Swayed by doubt, never at rest,

Beside a towering, rooted tree whose greenery

Stands firm in conviction against every wind?

You are free of these lowlands, where

We go, morning or evening, amid their groans.

And what, on the smiling peaks,

Is the lightning of hopes beside the gleam of wounds?

Give ear to this earth, and listen to what

She laments; in whom but you could she ever confide?

She floats upon the flood of her pain,

And where, within her pain, is Noah's ark?

The most awe-inspiring silent thing on high

Is the most eloquent revealer in plain speech.

It taunts the earth when she grows dark

With the brightness upon its crown.

Does wisdom mock what besets us—

Our whims and our unruly reins?

Fools that we are, the utmost reach of all our aims

Is broken resolve and a crippled wing.

I seek to shield Truth's justice from our injustice,

For many a wounded eagle lies upon the flatlands,

And many a wanderer far from summits on high,

Whose home is every towering, far-flung height.

You are all the sanctuary it hopes for,

And all it seeks is to journey to you.

    محرابُه وجهُ السماء الصبيح

    The eagle is nothing but a monk on high;

Its prayer niche is the sky's fair face

And her generous heart—so what brought it down

Onto the grim, ugly, miserly earth?

Upon the earth, where its hymns

Are the wailing of the sorrowful and the cry of sores.

A supplicant, weeping with tears of sorrow

Over the nights, and sick, laid low.

How wretched the earth is with her worshippers!

She gladdens whatever she permits among their motley throngs.

The temple has disowned its visitors,

And the monastery has grown a stranger to sackcloth robes.

The body found no deliverance there

From the murk of clay, and no soul was saved.

    لا يعرفُ الإِشفاقَ قلبٌ مُشيح

    O master of the summit, listen to us;

A heart turned away knows no compassion.

And look at the knife in an arena

Where the slaughtered victim's blood has roared.

    كم من بَكِيٍّ وظَمِيٍّ طليح

    And pour love's dew into our mouths;

How many weepers, and thirsty ones worn out!

For perhaps, after suffering, there will dawn

A lovely face and a lovely age.
