O beloved of the soul, O soul of hopes,

You do not know the soul's thirst for you,

And my yearning, in an undying moan,

For death, which I drink from your eyes.

Ah, that hour of outpouring and sorrows,

And a meeting I had not reckoned on,

And a conversation that never crossed my thoughts.

O you of long estrangement, O you of bitter absence,

Serenity and peace arrived, O enchanter,

After separation had ravaged the lonely heart.

And a garden, shade, and clouds drew near,

After fire had ravaged the barren life.

The hour passed like a happy dream,

And its rapture coursed like pure wine.

Life went by, and this is a new life,

I lived it through your sweet, tender mouth.

The hour passed, and night drew near,

And silent love comes and goes.

And our bodies dissolved and disappeared,

And in the darkness we embraced, soul to soul.

You hear the poetry, and my poetry is from you, for you,

And through your inspiration I fashioned the rhyme.

You, O miracle of beauty, are an angel,

Every word from you is sacred poetry.

They returned to us in majesty and silence,

And images of the sorrowful past came one after another.

How can it fade, O my beloved, or die—

What we imprinted on the heart of the years?

How can what we wrote with fire perish,

And inscribed with sleeplessness and tears?

Night and day bear witness to it,

And the martyr hidden within the ribs.

Our souls met in an open space,

Like two strangers who rested from a journey.

And we set down our baggage in an oasis,

Our provisions there were hopes and remembrance.

And you asked about the past, and whether

My world had been beautiful away from your shade.

O my beloved, where can I flee from shame,

And where can my heart flee from your question?

How deeply the poor man's offering shames me,

Of lost youth, or of an eye's light.

Illness walks within the heart of life's allotted span,

And I see that I have not repaid my debt to you.

I am your singer, and my song is yours alone,

So decree what pleases you for my today and yesterday.

Time has passed, and in your absence I remember nothing

But your days, O twin of my soul.

And I am the bird; my heart has never yearned

For anything but your bough and the old nest.

We have not changed, nor has youth altered,

Nor pure love, nor noble affection.

Its memory has never left my mind or yours.

How can the heart forget the dreams of its youth?

    My eye has awakened to the dawn of your beauty;

How can dawn be forgotten, O dawn of life?
