    My quiet, faraway place,

    Be my refuge from mankind.

    فآوِه أنتَ والظلام

    The hunted fugitive has come to you;

So shelter him, you and the darkness.

How lovely, this hour of separation!

No hardship in it, nor misery.

O season of illusion and imagination,

    Would you not linger forever?

    O final world,

What share, I wonder, lies in you?

Is there rest in you for the conscience,

Or a tryst in you with a beloved?

How sweet death would be if we could behold him,

Or if reunion in you could be hoped for!

He would shake slumber from his eye,

And the shrouded sleeper would come forward.

But doubt about what you conceal

    Has settled over all minds.

I marvel at man: how much he groans,

Yet finds life a pleasant pasture!

The love of life in us has come to this:

It has made beasts content with carrion,

And taught the generous to be miserly,

And rooted cowardice in our natures.

    لا البدر يوحي ولا الغدير

    Silence and stagnation have lingered over us;

Neither full moon nor pool inspires.

O world of oppression and fetters,

You have tormented the captive bird.

I fled a world that brought harm,

And came, O my Kaaba, to visit.

    Bring imagination, then, and poetry,

That I may pour it into the mouth of the ages.

I fled the world of suffering,

And came, hoping to live beside you.

I drink from the splendor of the sky

Poetry, and water my heart with inspiration.

I have grown weary, in these worlds,

Of the farce of death and life,

And the sight of shackles on wrists,

And the stain of humiliation on foreheads.

    Bodies passing through the years,

The same in life and order,

The same in resentment and groaning,

The same in hatred and strife.

And that veneer is the same,

    Hiding shameful traits.

Decay has worn away the faces of hypocrisy,

Yet that mask has not dissolved.

The very same lie of tears,

The very same laugh of deceit,

And the curve of these ribs

Over the thirsty, hungry ones within.

As though the breast of darkness had tightened

From so much outpouring of sorrow at every moment.

Alas for it—how has it endured

The complaints of all creation through the years?

As though it spits out shooting stars

To ease an anguish that makes it groan,

Like the heart, when oppressed and saddened:

    Memories ease its burden.

How many a sigh has settled in the ribs,

    Enclosed by an ailing frame,

    فإن نبح سميت قريض

    Destructive wherever it settles;

And if it barks, it is called verse.

How many a sigh lengthens in the darkness,

Drifting to its ear, along with poetry!

If only the star understood what we say,

Or night understood what we keep secret!

What is wrong with them, the eyes of the heavens,

    Scattered across the void,

    Peering from blackest gloom,

    Without understanding or intelligence?

Is there no faithful friend, no helper,

In this pitch-darkness without a dawn?

And whenever a fresh groan arises in me,

The moan of the winds mocks me.

    Suppose we complained without cease:

What is a complainer's lot with no one to listen,

And poetry's lot, if it obeys?

Would that it had lived without obeying!

It is lost in the depths of time,

    Its echo scattered among mankind,

Who knows the torment of the one who recited it.

O river, I am filled with envy

And from one beloved to another

    You gaze tenderly and smile.

And every morning traveler has a share

    Of your cold, icy water.

    فراح ريّان إن يذُق

    O river, you have quenched every thirsty one;

And whoever tastes it goes away quenched.

So have mercy on my burning thirst,

For my mouth has spent the night burning.

O river, I have an ember at my side,

    Its coals quiet by day;

    وساكن الليل كم أثار

But when night draws near, it torments me,

And how much the stillness of night has stirred!

    فهل ترى منك مسعدُ

    I stood parched before you;

Is there, I wonder, any help to be had from you?

But if its fire rebels, be

Its grave to the very end of eternity.

You show me the far-off one who forsook me,

And his nearness is not on my mind.

And whenever I thought I had forgotten,

An image of him passed before me.

    Memory passes after memory,

And every memory has its tears.

And heart-rending memories pass in succession

From every past that will not return.

A past—how many stumbles it held,

And how much torment that has ended!

How often I said: let no curtain be raised,

And no recalling what has passed.

O you, before my eyes I now see

Your image, which perfumed the breezes.

By God, what do you seek from me,

When you have left me nothing but pain?

In God's keeping is what you squandered

Of hearts that have become dust.

    إنَّا غفرنا لمن أساء

    We did not repay you in kind for what you did;

We have forgiven those who did wrong.

Do not think that healing has arrived,

For our wound is still fresh.

Its seeming to have closed deceives us,

    Yet it still conceals pus.

O night, I have come to weep,

And come to find solace, and come to forget.

My torment has lasted long, and so has my doubt,

And my heart has died, yet found no consolation.
