My pain erased my offense against you and atoned for it.

Grant that I did wrong—is it not time for you to forgive?

My soul is torn apart, and you have left it

To the claws of the world and the fangs of humankind.

My soul is torn apart; had you reached it,

You would have gathered its scattered remains.

And is there no place for me in the shade of your love,

To which I may crawl and fling myself, seeking help?

    كيف اصطباري عن لقائك أشهرا

    I could not bear an hour without seeing you;

How can I endure months without seeing you?

Who turned the lovely mouth into a frown,

And went to the sky's face and clouded it?

O you fates, your eye does not see

Beneath the darkness, a weary man whom sleep eludes,

Thirsty—if his loved ones sold a drop

For his life and the whole world, he would surely buy it.

Hide your wounds, and take pride in their ravages.

Your singing songbird, soaring in the heights,

Gazes toward you across the distance and rises,

Then the deadly wound drags him down to the earth.

He has lived, tormented by his pride,

And he may well meet his final day still proud.

How long must my silence and long endurance last,

O you who wronged me without knowing it?

And when shall I return once more to your spacious courts,

To show you my wound, the blood, and the dagger?
