Many a night in which the horizon grew clear,

And bloomed with what God had wondrously made,

And a fragrant breeze stole through it,

As though the night were a fragrant garden.

I said, 'O Lord, for whom have you adorned it,

And for whom are these radiant chandeliers?'

Then a dark haze overtook the horizon, and there appeared

Clouds crawling toward the face of the moon.

Whenever they drew near, they reached out toward it,

    Like greedy hands waiting.

I cried to the full moon, 'Take heed of the warnings!

Save the halo—it is encircled by danger.

    لا تبحها لسواد معتكر

    Do not yield the table of light to them;

Do not yield it to murky darkness!'

The thunder guffawed and boomed in mockery,

As though the thunder were a drunken lout.

    I rose, terrified, and my fist made ready;

Then it was thrust out, then drawn back in weakness.

The heart grieves for beauty when

The crows guffaw and the wolf mocks.

The rose shelters behind thorns; but if

The pickers grow many, the needles are of no use.

Ah, for a bough rich in fruit,

And for the one who covets that fruit!

Ah, for doubt, and for love, and for

    Haunting thoughts, suspicions, and apprehension,

Which cloaked the horizon in darkness that was nothing

But a cloud crouching over thought.

Often I have said to my heart, whenever

It groaned in my breast like someone dying:

'If she has betrayed and disowned our love,

Then add her to the other wounds.'
