In me is what you feel, and in your heart is what is in me.

So come, let us weep, O confidant of my youth.

Tears flow while you are near and joined to me,

just as they flow when you are among the absent.

You failed to recognize the fire in me that evening, when

my lips touched your jujube-red fingertips.

And my right hand wandered through thick, jet-black hair,

flowing freely like a gliding brook.

And you asked what my silence meant, and my lowered gaze,

and why the doubter's bewilderment lingered.

Come, let me taste what certainty is, and bring it

    free of pain, unadulterated.

Come, so that once in my life I may swear

that what I am given to drink is not bitter sap.

Alas for this certainty, though its taste is

in my mouth—and for my distrust of my delicious draught!

Who are you—a sorcerer from which worlds,

holding the reins of minds for yourself alone?

Wait, scion of light! These worlds are not

ever a place for your captivating majesty.

I spoke to myself when I saw you appear,

and questioned at length without an answer:

What is the pure angel doing in a world

that perishes, with days like the gleam of a mirage?

What do the righteous do on the earth that

has made the righteous and the rabble equal,

ever turning through the years, as it always has,

from a night of sins to a dawn of repentance?

Life grows dear upon it, until it ends

in the dust, cheap as dust.

Forgive, my dear friend, my doubt about the vision that

has taken possession of my feelings and my sound judgment.

Oh, how often the heart has cried out over hopes,

and lamented the gleam of their deceitful mirage!

O temple of beauty, whose pillar is blessed,

whose light enchants, whose precincts are pure!

There is no truth except in your flame alone

and its majesty, enduring through the ages.

I offered my sacrifice to it—a remnant

of a heart worn out for loved ones.

So, if you permit, I will pour its blood into it,

and come back, praising my return from your heights,

and melt its essence as a sacrifice for eyes

    heavenly, whose sanctuary is holy.
