I have grown so despairing that, were death

to call to me, I would cry to it, "Come!"

Come! For on earth I have nothing to aspire to,

nor do I see anything for me beyond it.

What is my remaining here worth, now that

I have shaken both my hands free of it today?

I flee from my despair to my cup,

in which I bury my living hope.

O you who flee my paradise,

come, or give me both my wings.

Let us weep for the youth of us both, and for our hopes,

and throw yourself into my arms.

Like my father, I am intent on my despair and my cup,

and absorbed in my mirage and my drink.

I have done with taking comfort in hopes,

save a glimmer in the dying ashes,

a flicker of life, consoling me with the thought that you will return

one day to my heart, before the day I depart.

Then, when the fates so willed and you returned to me,

I reconsidered myself and questioned my judgment.

Do I see your sunrise in the waning of my sunsets,

and breathe your fragrance amid my withering youth?

Bring it, pour me a drink, and drink to sorrow's secret,

and to the remnants of a heart and its sorrow.

Easy, my drinking companion: how can love for her be forgotten

by one who seeks solace in her memory?

You kept giving me drink to make me forget love,

until I forgot, remembering no one but her.

    هذا الحباب أعادها ورواها

    We had a cup, and we had a story;

this foam brought it back and told it anew.

Now mist has veiled her, and here I am,

seeing her from behind tragedies and tears.

Time destroyed her mist and her foam,

and her dreams and visions evaporated.

    في القلب متسع غدا لسواها

    Do not weep for her: she is gone, and love for her has died;

tomorrow the heart will have room for another.

I loved her and folded away her page; how often

has a discerning man read a page and folded it away.

    لمّا تكد تطأ الثرى قدماها

    That newborn girl's glad tidings were short-lived;

her feet had scarcely touched the soil.

Morning bore her call to the sands,

and the breeze drifted by at evening, announcing her death.
