I asked you, O rock of our meeting:

When will time reunite what it has parted?

O Kaaba that witnessed two lovelorn wanderers,

who returned to its exquisite beauty:

whenever time persisted in its decrees,

we made our solemn pledge upon its back.

The tenderest love lay beside it, exhausted,

and the breeze moaned there, weary.

The sea hurled its waves toward you,

so you defied its blue current.

And your sides repelled them, roaring,

as though you had angered a fettered lion.

Upon you we read the book of life,

and love unsealed its locked-away secret.

We see the sun melting into the ocean,

and await the full moon as it ascends.

When the west spreads out its robes

and unleashes in the soul whatever it unleashes,

we say: Has the sun dyed it,

and left its spilled blood there?

Or is the west, like the heart, bleeding from wounds,

with a desire too hard to attain?

    O heart behind this cloudbank,

that wept for freshness and youth in its prime!

And O image in the reaches of the clouds,

in which we saw our overwhelming sorrow!

God help us against an image in the inner soul,

which a young man sees whenever he bows his head.

He sees the wound's image in the folds of the

    heart, still inflamed and searing.

    So fidelity denies it healing,

and remembrance refuses to show mercy.

O rock of our pledge, the billows surged

and met you, raging and enraged.

And beside you lay the wilderness, holding conjectures,

    when thought probed its essence.

In the billows I see life's struggle,

    and its sweeping, foolish current.

And in it I glimpse the strife of men,

    when one boat pursues another.

And how, for all the breadth of this

expanse, do we lodge it in so narrow a place?

I stood by the sea, questioning myself,

    absorbed in far-ranging reveries:

    Did God, before creating life,

intend it to be created upon the waves?

    لم نكتشف سره الأعمقَا

    And He embodied in the wilderness the riddle of death;

we have not discovered its deepest secret.

In the whiteness of the sands I see the

gray hair, and the pale, unsettling shroud.

In the mirage I see the delusion of

souls, and hope disappointed and defeated.

And God has made this rock,

between life and decay, a deadly barrier.

And He embodied in it the defiance of the ages:

you shall not be violated, nor shall you wear away.

    Life desires to meet death,

but God does not permit the meeting.

O rock of our pledge, I have returned to you,

and our union has been torn by what tore it.

I show you the graying of my martyred heart,

though gray hair has not crowned the parting of my hair.

It lamented its captivity in the cords of love,

and longed for God to set it free.

But when fate decreed the loosening of its bonds,

once free, it yearned for its captivity.

For whom did God adorn this sky,

or beautify the universe, or set it in order?

For whom does dawn rise on its horizon,

    appearing there radiant and delightful?

For whom did this breeze touch the clouds,

and make shimmer whatever it made shimmer from them?

    وإن ضاحكته الربى صفَّقَا

    When the doves reminded it, it moaned;

and if the hills laughed with it, it clapped.

Is it for the bird, alone in spirit, that goes

roaming the watering places, seeking somewhere to drink?

And by your Lord, it is not for this, but

for two souls that soared across a horizon.
