Here are a gathering, remembrance, and fidelity.

Answer us, you who answered your friends.

    Oh, what an exhausting loneliness!

It does not lift, and the days drag on.

Death carried off the dearest companion,

and the most faithful of the faithful rests in the dust.

I do not forget you as you came to me,

complaining of the treachery of a friend who had wronged you.

Ah, for a wound, and for a heart that, around

the wound's pain, closed itself in bitter defiance.

Whenever the wound pained you and you felt

it, you soothed it with pride.

O you who complain of time, rest.

We are all alike, O you who complain.

    The wounds that you suffered

left our souls but a dying remnant of life.

    وتولى الدهر سأمان وجاء

    Life grew weary of them, but did not heal them;

and time turned away, weary, and returned.

Death gave them leave, and they closed,

and healed them after healing had proved impossible.

I do not lament you—can an immortal be lamented,

in the expanses of eternity, richly rewarded?

How can I lament you—can a virtuous man be lamented,

who lived doing good, ever attended by prayers?

The world is nothing but goodness, despite

the scarcity of goodness and the dearth of great people.

The world is but a young man who lived for you,

giving of his sustenance until he perished.

    فهو بالذكرى جدير بالبقاء

    So if he has died, he lives on through you;

and through remembrance he deserves to endure.

    That poet has comforted you,

and wept over your sufferings with all his tears.

That poet has sung to you,

singing out in your groves the glad tidings of joy.

And the masters of poetry are the lamps that

    the desert winds have shattered.

Their lights endure forever despite decay,

and by them the traveler in the night found light.

Speech will perish, save their words,

and people will die, save the poets.

Return to us as a bewildered breeze,

    bearing whispers, longing, and loyalty.

Then soar on two wings toward

a world for which we thirst so deeply.

Fly as the breezes fly, and leave behind a foot

grown heavy with thorns in the land of suffering.
